The 11th Annual Graduate Group in Nutritional Biology (GGNB) Research Symposium showcased a wide array of groundbreaking studies that push the boundaries of nutritional science. From food security to gut microbiome health, researchers presented innovative solutions to global and local nutritional challenges.

PARIS – Since taking the role of Director of Performance Nutrition within UC Davis Athletics, Rachael Mack has been committed to providing expert input while building meaningful and trusting connections with UC Davis student athletes.

Mack's ability to excel and be an asset for the Aggies comes partly from her time spent as a former lacrosse student athlete and Aggie alumni. It also comes from her time with USA Men's Water Polo, and just this past summer Mack spent her second summer Olympics with the team helping them take home a bronze medal.

After serving 15 productive years as Department Chair, Professor Francene Steinberg is transitioning leadership as Department Chair to Professor Gerardo Mackenzie. Dr. Steinberg has skillfully guided the Department through significant changes at UC Davis. For instance, she oversaw the recruitment of 10 new faculty members, revamped the Nutrition Sciences and Clinical Nutrition majors, and adeptly steered the Department through the challenges posed by the pandemic. 

Sometimes, all it takes to eat better is a little nudge in the right direction. A team of UC Davis researchers is working on a new smartphone app that makes it easier to eat healthy by recognizing what’s on your plate and offering personalized suggestions to improve your diet.

Food banks and food pantries are often the last line of defense against food insecurity. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly 13% of Americans faced food insecurity at some point in 2022. Hunger isn’t the only issue. Food must be nutritious to be beneficial. Lack of nutrients can lead to numerous chronic illnesses including cancer.

Associate Professor, Lauren Au, PhD, RDN has been awarded the mid-career award by the American Society for Nutrition Community and Public Health Nutrition Research Interest Section (CPHN RIS). This award is to recognize and honor the scholarly achievements of its members in nutrition research, policy and practice. Congratulations Dr. Au!

Debbie Fetter is one of five faculty members asked to speak at commencement ceremonies this weekend.

Debbie Fetter read the emailed invitation and couldn’t contain her joy. 

“I literally yelled and immediately called my husband,” she said.

Christine Stewart, PhD, MPH, Professor, UC Davis and Leila Larson, MPH, PhD, Assistant Professor, Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior, University of South Carolina, Arnold School of Public Health have organized a NUTRITION 2024 session to honor the life and contributions of ASN Member Elizabeth “Beth” Prado, PhD, Associate Professor, UC Davis who recently passed away. 

Barbara O. Schneeman, PhD is the 2024 recipient of the David Kritchevsky Career Achievement Award, presented by the American Society for Nutrition (ASN). This prestigious award is presented in recognition of a career devoted to promoting interactions among, support for, and assistance to outstanding nutrition researchers in governmental, private and academic sectors; resulting in the application of fundamental knowledge to delivery of better nutrition products and information to the public. Dr.

UC Davis student Makhi Jones likes to enjoy a hearty meal. One of his go-to favorites is the Hawaiian Spicy Chicken entrée at Good Friends Hawaiian Poke restaurant in downtown Davis. The clinical nutrition major who is set to graduate this spring, said it’s all about balance when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle.

“I’m not perfect; I still eat out here and there, but I try not to do it too often,” Jones said.

While he likes to dine out sometimes, he frequently prepares meals himself.

Dr. Lauren Au’s Community Nutrition class is centered around a research project to improve the health and well-being of the UC Davis campus community. Seniors spend their quarter developing useful skills, such as creating a research question, collecting and analyzing data, and translating their findings into recommendations during a poster presentation. Top presentations are selected by their peers and teaching team. This year, a special award was dedicated to Dr. Elizabeth Prado, who was the former co-instructor of this course and recently passed away in 2023.

The nationwide baby formula shortage two years ago forced many parents to involuntarily switch brands or types. A recent survey from researchers at the University of California, Davis, highlights how these substitutions led to undesirable effects for babies, including vomiting. The study was published in the journal Nutrients.
